Hernandez will start season on 15-day DL

Kansas City Royals pitcher Runelvys Hernandez will begin the year on the 15-day disabled list because of concerns about his weight and stamina.

Projected to be the team's No. 2 starter, Hernandez allowed nine runs - eight earned - and five home runs in 12 innings. He also walked 10 and hit a batter. Hernandez will be dropped down to fifth in the rotation, manager Buddy Bell said Monday, a slot that's not needed until April 14.

Infielder Tony Graffanino was claimed off waivers Tuesday by the Kansas City Royals, returning to the team that traded him to the Boston Red Sox eight months ago.

"It's a place I'm going where I feel like I'm wanted and I should get decent playing time there," Graffanino said. "This wasn't a good situation for me."

Kansas City Royals Inside Pitch

Runelvys Hernandez will open the season on the disabled list instead of in the No. 2 slot in the Royals' rotation. The right-hander reported to camp around 30 pounds in excess on his listed weight of 250, and he pitched poorly in spring training. General manager Allard Baird said Monday that Hernandez is going on the DL because of stamina concerns. "The bottom line is where he's at is not where he needs to be," Baird said.
